LSI's New Presses Running
Had a chance to examine a copy printed from the newly operating presses at LSI. There's a recognizable difference between the way the fonts are processed now, from the previous printings. For this particular text, I had used a font that was originally rather thick and 'sturdy' (if that is an appropriate term); it now prints out thinner, and is less obtrusive. I like the way it looks.
[Side note: One of the key points in book layout and font choice is to allow someone to read the text without being distracted by the way the page looks (unless, of course, an 'artistic' look is desired). Personally, I prefer a balanced text block, justified, no widows or orphans (if at all possible), with occasional hyphenations. I know some small publishers try to remove all hyphenated words, but that can lead to unbalanced sentence tracking. (I've seen a few books with unjustified paragraphs, but that is really hard to pull off. Too often, it is just distracting.) The only real problem I see on occasion with small press cryptozoology books is the final word of a paragraph being carried over to the next page. That is annoying.]
Anyway, the new presses should also have better quality photograph reproduction, though they still may not be up to offset quality. I'll have a better idea when I get around to reprinting Blue Tiger, which has a few hunting photos in it.
