Blue Tiger, by Harry R. Caldwell
Available here. ($2.99) Harry R. Caldwell was a Methodist missionary to southern China. In Blue Tiger, first published in 1924, he writes about several of his adventures in that country. An avid hunter and amateur naturalist, he notes the challenges of hunting big-game like serow, big-horn, wapiti, boar, and tiger. He describes how his hunting of man-killing tigers paved the way for effective mission work, and spends several chapters discussing the political landmines of trying to affect peace between soldiers and bandits in an effort to spare the villagers caught between their fighting. Of particular interest, Caldwell offers the description of a fascinating creature, a blue-morph tiger, that he attempted to capture for science. |

Paley's Natural Theology, by William Paley.
Available here. ($2.99) William Paley's Natural Theology, first published in 1802, brings depth to the history of intelligent design arguments. The contrivance of the eye, the ear, and numerous other anatomical features throughout the natural world are presented as arguments for God's presence and concern. While there are distinct differences between Paley's arguments and those used today by intelligent design theorists and creationists, it remains a fascinating glimpse of the nineteenth-century's debate over the roles of religion and science. |
